This project has a very brief history, started on it very recently, At 70, I'm not reconnecting with jazz and art—I'm learning for a second time. When I was around 12 years old (1967), my uncle passed away and left me his extensive jazz record collection. I had an appreciation for this music then, I listened to them often, but honestly, I don't remember most of the names or details that of those albums or musicians.
What I do remember, is sitting in the Kansas City Philharmonic concert as a young child, (1961 ish) Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite created vivid images in my mind. Ravel's Bolero became another favorite, its building intensity painting pictures I could see with my eyes closed.
Classical music never left me. It was the constant thread through decades where jazz lay dormant. Now, in this chapter of my life, I'm learning the jazz musicians and the diversity of styles in jazz. Discovering musicians I never really knew and rediscovering the vulnerability that comes with learning something fresh.
This is AStepBack—not just a nostalgic glance over my shoulder, but an honest step into learning with the wisdom of 70 years and the curiosity of someone hearing James Moody's flute, John Coltrane's Equinox, and Bud Powell's piano as if for the first time.
